Streetmix is a web-based street design platform, which encourages anyone to redesign streets in their own neighborhood, without needing urban planning or civil engineering expertise, founded by Lou Huang in 2011. Although civic engagement is their primary goal, Streetmix’s ease of use have allowed professionals to easily iterate through proposals and concepts, and be able to create communicate ideas to the general populace.
We worked with the Streetmix team on establishing a Web Monetization API as a revenue method to keep their platform truly accessible and funded solely by industry professionals as their customers. Focusing on Project Management and Product management along with managing a nimble three software engineer team, and planning out the front-end design, our team worked very closely with Streetmix’s core development team to take the project to the next level.
Initially incubated at Code for America in 2013 and more recently in NEW INC’s third cohort, Streetmix is currently free to use, and have been used by thousands of industry professionals around the world. Many people-focused street interventions such as bike lanes and pedestrian amenities have been made possible by incorporating Streetmix into an advocacy campaign or a civic engagement process.
Streetmix still needs to capture the value they create, so that they can support their team and ongoing infrastructure costs. Our involvement included the project management and planning to implement a user subscription system, by experimenting with the Web Monetization API. Streetmix hopes to further their commitment to open web standards and to lower the barrier to entry for customers.
